Resources for the differently-abled at SC4

In the words of Helen Keller, “Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.”

St. Clair Community College provides many services to differently-abled students to succeed. Programs offered include the Writing Center, Math Center, TRIO program, and the Achievement Center.

The Writing Center is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Writing Center is located in room 121 of the Main Building and offers tutoring in different areas of writing assignments.

The Math Center is another helpful tool for those who struggle in math. The Math Center provides tutoring for MTH 50, MTH 75 and MTH 102. For help regarding upper level math courses, check the Math Center’s schedule. The Math Center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 .pm. Monday through Thursday. The Math Center is located in room 101 of the Clara E. Mackenzie Building.

Another program offered is TRIO. It is a federally funded program that offers one on one academic support to students. To utilize this program students must qualify for and be accepted. To be eligible for TRIO students must be a first generation college student or be eligible for federal funding. The TRIO office is located in Room 211 of the Main Building.

Another avenue is the Achievement Center, which provides free tutoring. The Achievement Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and reopens at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Friday it is open at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students who have disabilities can qualify for help if they can provide a documented disability.

The college also provides Success Seminars for students who would like to learn more about their college environment. For those students just returning to college, SC4 offers basic courses for those struggling in certain subjects.

Whether students are just returning to school or are students with special needs, SC4 offers a wide variety of services to help every student succeed.
